This is the sweater @adamsandler was talking about yesterday on the show. My first Johnny Carson appearance two months before he retired. In the middle of my act I looked at my sweater and said ‘oooh somebody went to the Gap today…’ ( cue deafening laughter). If you’re color blind this picture will look black-and-white but the sweater was green cable knit because I thought I should wear a sweater in August, and it was over a sleeveless flannel shirt that I used to skate board in. I had no idea what was going on

Released on Netflix in May 2020 and produced by Adam Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison Productions, Spade stars in The Wrong Missy, a romantic comedy gone wrong.

Tim (Spade) confuses two women both named Melissa and invites the wrong one to a corporate retreat with him in Hawaii. Tim ends up on the trip with Lauren Lapkus’ Melissa instead of the Melissa he went on a successful blind date with played by Molly Sims. Despite The Wrong Missy leaving something to be desired for critics, that hasn’t stopped it from taking the top spot on Netflix.

So, what’s next for Spade after The Wrong Melissa? According to his acting credits, he’s set to be in a yet-to-be-named HBO series from Diablo Cody.

How It All Began With Saturday Night Live

Fresh out of college, David first made the rounds of bars and campuses doing stand-up comedy. He frequented comedy hot spots like Greasy Tony’s Pizza in Tempe, Arizona. It was in one of these random gigs that he was discovered and offered a small part in the 1987 film Policy Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol. Although he acted alongside Steve Guttenberg and Sharon Stone, the movie was a flop.

However, this lesser known film led David to better opportunities, like being showcased as one of the six comics for the 13th Annual Young Comedians Show in 1989. During this event, he met fellow comic Dennis Miller, the man who would pave the way for Spade to work as a writer in no less than the Emmy Award-winning show, Saturday Night Live. From 1990-1996, David wrote and eventually acted for SNL and it led to some comedy films with fellow funny actor, Chris Farley. The comic duo starred in Tommy Boy and Black Sheep.

Friend and fellow comedian Dennis Miller helped David Spade get his big break. He got David a writing job on NBC’s Saturday Night Live in 1990. Eventually Spade became a cast member as well as a writer. On SNL, Spade was noted for his sarcastic one liners in skits where he played a flight attendant, a receptionist for Dick Clark and a Gap Girl. Although the early 1990’s were not SNL’s best rated seasons, David Spade did not go unnoticed.

When most of the cast members quit the show in 1995, Spade continued on the show for another year to help transition the show into a new era. He also became good friends with fellow cast mate Chris Farley and the two would star in successful comedic movies. Spade describes his years at SNL as difficult. It was tough work and the criticism was often harsh, but the experience helped make him money, even though he was one of the lowest paid writers and actors on the show, and opened the door for new adventures. David Spade has returned to his beloved SNL as a host.
